Orbital Maps
In co-operation with the University of Victoria and the Royal British Columbia Museum, CNC Creations played a major role in the development of "Orbital Maps".
An Orbital Map begins with a large, three-dimensional terrain model that serves as a blank projection screen. The maps are manufactured on our CNC router using remotely sensed elevation data gathered by sources such as satellites, the space shuttle and aircraft mounted laser-ranging systems known as LiDar.
On the screen, the graphics gurus perform their magic. In addition to overlaying the model with satellite and aerial images, the filmmaker uses images and sound to create a fully rounded experience to the viewer.

The first project was completed in 2003. A large scale Orbital Map of BC was commissioned by the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria. The map is 21 feet high and 16 feet wide. It is now featured as the main attraction at the entrance to the museum.

There are now Orbital Maps in several museums including the Prince of Wales Museum in Yellowknife, NWT and the Trev Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition in Vancouver.
